VOL. 3                   NO.3

Gujarat Situations

Mr. Narendra Modi’s game plan misfired.

Mr. Modi, the chief minister of Gujarat dissolved the assembly to conduct elections in the state under his supervision within six months utilizing the communal Hindu-Muslim divide and frency developed in the state.

The Election Commission sent their representatives to study the situation in the state. After getting their report the full commission also visited the state to find out that whether peaceful elections can be conducted within the time frame suggested by the state government. The commission came to the conclusion that it can conduct the elections only during November-December. However, this did not fit in with the proposal made by the government that election should be conducted in September or early October.

The infuriated chief minister said that the commission has gone beyond the constitutional provision 174(1), which stipulates that elections should be conducted within six months of the last assembly session. And therefore they were wrong. He accused the chief election commissioner J. M. Lyngdoh with communal bias and he being a Christian purposely supported Sonia Gandhi, another Christian. This statement of modi attracted big criticism and condemnation from all sections of the public.

The government of India decided to seek presidential reference to find out the constitutionality of the commission’s order. The president referred the matter to the Supreme Court to give their verdict. The Supreme Court considered the matter and given their verdict on the question of time frame and said that the election commissioner’s decision to hold the elections to Gujarat legislature during November- December was correct. Other legal matters will be considered by them later.

Thus Narendra Modi's plan to hold the elections in Gujarat within six months time is failed and he has to get out from the office of the chief minister and the state will be under president's rule.

Mr. Modi as part of his election campaign decided to have a "gaurav rath yatra" which is also intended to further develop the communal divide in the state so that in the coming elections BJP can gain upper hand. The minority Muslim community will not be able to exercise their franchise freely. But this also seems to be misfired because the public condemnation against it was so large and the people of Gujarat too are realising the real face of  BJP plan.

In the history of free India as we have noted earlier in these columns such organized and preplanned killing of Muslim minorities for the simple "crime" of being born a Muslim never took place.

India’s unity and democratic structure is protected through the secular foundation of our constitution. This foundation is sought to be broken by the hindutva forces organized under RSS and BJP. Therefore who loves democracy in our country should come forward to fight back this offensive of communal fascism.

Even after the direction of the Supreme Court the VHP leaders have come out in the open stating that Gujarat will be repeated throughout the country. Therefore it is time for all to wake up to resist this dangerous phenomenon.
