War On Iraq

Mr. George W. Bush is hell bent on attacking Iraq in spite of his almost total isolation from his  own people and the people all over the world, including the governments except Briton and a few others.  The UN Security Council discussion on 14th February 2003 thoroughly exposed his claim that IRAQ is having weapons of mass destruction.  “The chief of the UN Arms Inspection Team Mr. Hans Blix in his presentation clarified that he could not find  any arms of mass destruction, and  said  that IRAQ was rendering all the required help for proceeding with the inspections without hindrance and that they have conducted 400 inspections in 300 sites. At the last stage of our inspection they have provided more information and said that the evidence, provided by US State Secretary – Mr. Kolin Powell, was only a fiction.”  The International Energy Agency Chief Mr. Mohamed Elbaradei said that his team could not also find any evidence about  ‘Iraq has restarted its nuclear weapons programme,’.  The assurance given by Iraq, to impose ban against manufacturing –or importing weapons of mass destruction in to IRAQ which is significant.  Both of them wanted inspections should continue.

During the discussions in the Security Council except Britain and Spain no one else supported the US position  - including their friends like   Chili, Angola etc.  France, Russia and China among the permanent 5 wanted more time to be given to the weapon inspectors and maintained that the problem can be solved peacefully. The US allegation that IRAQ has Al-Quida connection was strongly rebutted by France during the discussion.  It was found that the United States cannot muster support of nine members for passing a resolution by the Security Council. They could only mobilize four votes as per the present estimation. Thus they are isolated in the UN Security Council.

World over big demonstrations are taking place declaring no to war on Iraq.  The demonstration in Britain was the biggest numbering over a million which literally shook the British administration. The demonstrations in Italy and other capitals of Europe were also very big which had telling  effects on their governments.  The Italian Prime Minister who was the vocal supporter of the US is now vacillating. In United Sates it is reported more than 80% of the people are against this war.

Nobody today believes that this war is for disarming Iraq. But the real intention is to get control over the oil wealth of Iraq and to pave the way for the full domination of the Middle East oil rich area as part of their drive for world domination.  The oil monopolies the big capitalists of the war industry and the biggest multinational corporations of US are the main striving force behind the war strategy of the Bush Administration. As declared by Bush earlier that they will go to war against Iraq even without UN sanctions. Also the doctrine of war prepared by US administration claims that they will use atomic weapons even in a limited war.

Iraq a small country with only 23 million people are facing the second attack from the united states within a period of 12 years.  During the first attack in 1991 the United States dropped more than 88500 tones of bombs and killed about 1,50,000 people.  The major part of the attack were directed against the civilian population. All what is valuable in the country was destroyed through this bombing. Industrial units, transportation facilities, water supply systems, power stations, schools, hospitals, churches etc.  After the war the UN imposed sanctions led to bar all kinds of supplies including food, and imposed blockade against selling of their oil which was the lifeline for their livelihood. This continued for almost 11 years, the fallout of which was indescribable misery for the people. It is said that everyday nearly 300 Iraqis were dying due to malnutrition.  Total estimated 10 lakh people died including  5 lakh children.   Such brutality never witnessed in human history.

Now for the second attack the US administration wanted an alibi by appointing an inspection team again as pointed out earlier to find out weapons of mass destruction which is also not found by the inspectors after more than two months intensive inspection. US is still not satisfied. And they are out to attack Iraq.  This is the monstrous face of US imperialism. Today Iraq, tomorrow any country who refuse to adhere to US dictates will face the same situation.  Therefore who loves democracy and  freedom should stand up and say No to War.

We must also note that the  Vajpayee government is sitting at the fence. Not taking an unequivocal stand to the American policy of attacking Iraq. Instead Mr Vajpayee is philosophizing that “we are against war” etc. We must also expose this hypocrisy.
